Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) that emphasizes acceptance of difficult thoughts and feelings, while also encouraging individuals to commit to actions that align with their values.

The central premise of ACT is that psychological suffering is often caused by attempts to avoid or control unwanted thoughts and emotions. These avoidance strategies can lead to a cycle of distress and dysfunction, ultimately hindering individuals from living rich and meaningful lives. Instead of trying to change or suppress their inner experiences, ACT teaches individuals to develop greater psychological flexibility by accepting their thoughts and feelings as they are, without judgment.

One of the key therapeutic techniques used in ACT is mindfulness, which involves paying attention to the present moment with openness and curiosity. Through mindfulness exercises and practices, individuals learn to observe their thoughts and feelings without getting entangled in them, allowing for greater clarity and perspective. This mindfulness-based approach helps individuals to develop a more compassionate and accepting relationship with themselves.

Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of ACT in treating a wide range of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, substance abuse, chronic pain, and eating disorders. ACT has also been used successfully in organizational settings, sports psychology, and coaching.
